Our wines
The Priorat is a region in the province of Tarragona, in Catalonia, which is characterized by its winemaking tradition and the quality of its wines. Within this territory we can find two denominations of origin: DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant. Both denominations reflect the character of a unique land, marked by the Mediterranean climate, its mountainous orography and its slate soils. Priorat wines are distinguished by their personality, their intensity and their aromatic complexity, as well as their ability to age.
DOQ PRIORAT
The Priorat Qualified Denomination of Origin covers a small territory, which does not reach 20,000 hectares, of which only 1,600 hectares are planted with vines. The orography is very uneven, “cataclysmic” in the words of Josep Pla. This makes the cultivation of the vine complicated, demanding and very expensive.
The vineyards produce little when compared to other wine-growing areas. In return, however, they offer exceptional grapes that, in the hands of their passionate winemakers, end up becoming wines recognized everywhere for their marked character and extraordinary complexity.
In the basements of some centuries-old houses of the DOQ Priorat, you can find winegrowers and oenologists working to produce a few thousand bottles. The wine comes from vines planted when it was still a sin for women to show their elbows. These are bottles that will travel to stores in New York, Zurich or Cape Town…
Close by, new wineries and new plantations confirm, day by day, the commitment to this territory. The Priorat is not an easy land, it does not give anything away and, nevertheless, it has managed to seduce a handful of enthusiasts in love with the grapes that the Licorella soils produce. The DOQ Priorat is full of wineries, always quite small, and despite the difficulties involved, a good number have prepared to receive visitors and share what they like best, the passion for wine and for the territory that gives it life.
DO MONTSANT
The territories of the DO Montsant wine is synonymous with life and effort, tenacity and enthusiasm. The importance of cooperative work and the growth in the number of wineries in recent years is good proof of this.
Taking advantage of the experience of the elders, a group of very young winegrowers and oenologists has managed to make this small appellation visible in the world context of wine. In a very short time, the wines of the DO Montsant have been able to win the respect and admiration of the great minds around the planet for their quality and their strong personality.
DO Montsant has surprised everyone. The wines speak of dynamism, of a wise blend of accumulated experience and the energy and enthusiasm that the new generations of farmers and winemakers are able to bring. They also talk about commitment, risk, cooperation and trust in order to get, for example, almost an entire town to take out a mortgage to start a cooperative.
United farmers who conquer palates and open markets in the United States, Germany, Holland, Israel… A good sample of the wineries and cooperatives that have played a role in this small revolution open their doors to visitors. They want to share their excellent wines, but above all, make you part of their adventure, of their commitment to the future.
